Master AI for Product Management: Take Your PM Skills to the Next Level

October 31, 2024

In this Storytell webinar, two experienced product leaders—Stephen Atwell from Harness and Phin Hochart from Zight—share their insights and practical applications of AI in their roles.

After attending Lenny Rachitsky's product manager summit, we couldn't agree more when Phin said, “You absolutely need to be an AI-enabled PM to evolve in the #product world, and there is no better time to start than now.”

This webinar aims to help product managers not just be efficient but also more effective in their roles by using AI and Storytell as a tool.

Product Manager Tasks You Can Automate with AI:

Analyzing Customer Calls

Customer calls are a goldmine of insights, but sifting through hours of recordings can be daunting. Stephen Atwell, a seasoned product manager, uses AI to transform this challenge into an opportunity. Here’s a step-by-step guide to his method:

Stephen Atwell describes his Storytell.ai experience: “That's the kind of power I get from Storytell. It allows me to leverage my customer data in low-effort ways that, historically, would have been too cost-prohibitive to do.”
  1. Data Collection: Stephen uploads recordings and transcripts from customer calls to Storytell, applying tags based on customer names, topics, or other relevant categories. This tagging system helps filter and focus on specific data sets later.
  2. Query and Analysis: Once uploaded, Stephen queries Storytell, which extracts insights and provides answers with citations from the transcripts for verification.
  3. Pattern Recognition: By asking targeted questions, Stephen identifies patterns in customer feedback, allowing him to prioritize features based on actual customer needs.
  4. Source Verification: Storytell’s “view sources” feature enables Stephen to verify insights by linking directly to relevant transcript parts, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  5. Customer-Specific Insights: Stephen filters data by customer, tailoring strategies and communications to individual client needs.

Crafting Elevator Pitches with AI

  1. Use Existing Conversations: Stephen taps into recorded customer interactions to draft initial pitches, providing a foundation that resonates with customers
  2. AI-Driven Drafting: Using Storytell, Stephen generates an elevator pitch draft highlighting the product's unique value proposition, aligned with customer needs.
  3. Iterative Refinement: The draft is refined through iterations with feedback from both AI insights and team members, ensuring the pitch is persuasive and accurate.

Feeding Data and Analyzing Insights

Phin Hochart, another experienced product manager, uses AI for data analysis and being more efficient working with cross-functional teams with documentation and product requirement. Here’s a closer look at his strategies:

Seen here: Phin uses Storytell's Beta that you can access at: Storytell.ai
  1. Comprehensive Data Upload: Phin uploads extensive datasets into Storytell, including transcripts, PDFs, and CSV files, providing a holistic view of customer feedback.
  2. Focused Analysis: Phin uses specific prompts to dive into particular aspects of data, such as user preferences or feature requests, to inform strategic decision-making.
  3. Using Storytell’s Prompt Library**: Phin utilizes Storytell’s prompt library to find the perfect prompt to extract insights. You can view product management prompts here: https://web.storytell.ai/prompts/product-manager or explore the entire library here: https://storytell.ai/prompts.

Ticket Processing and Documentation

For Phin, one of the things he find most value in using AI is that it “helps you remove a lot of the boring work.”
  1. Automated Documentation: Phin uses AI to automate the creation of support documents and product requirement specs. By feeding transcripts and ticket data into Storytell, he generates documentation with minimal manual effort.
  2. Efficient Feedback Loop: The AI-generated documents are reviewed and refined based on team feedback, streamlining the process and ensuring accuracy.
  3. Time Savings: This approach reduces documentation time from hours to mere minutes, allowing Phin to focus on higher-value tasks.

For product managers looking to stay competitive, using AI is no longer optional; it's essential. This session will leave attendees equipped with actionable strategies to drive efficiency, boost effectiveness, and unlock new levels of productivity in product management. Storytell CCO and co-founder Erika Anderson emphasized the importance of AI in product management by stating, "AI isn't the magic wand, but it's a great assist!"
