New in Storytell: Credit system and Labels

During this week's engineering demo , our engineering team shared updates on a sophisticated new credit management system, visibility on the LLM choice on Storytell's responses, and a new asset labeling feature that transforms how users organize and interact with their content.

Storytell credit system

Alex introduced a new credit system that gives users better visibility and control over their usage. The new system introduces different types of credits that work together to ensure you always know where you stand.

Every user now receives 300 daily credits that refresh automatically at midnight UTC, providing a consistent foundation for regular platform use. These daily credits complement your initial credits and any subscription credits, creating a flexible system that adapts to different usage patterns.

The system prevents users from accidentally going into negative balances by implementing smart spending controls. When you make a request that would exceed your available credits, the system will process it but prevent further actions until you add more credits. This approach ensures you can complete important work while maintaining clear boundaries around usage.

Credits now come with expiration dates to keep the system sustainable. Daily credits expire after 30 days, while purchased and subscription credits last for a full year. Storytell prioritizes which credits to use first, drawing from daily credits before moving to initial credits, ensuring you get the most value from your allocation.

AI model selection returns

The ability to choose and see which AI model answers your questions has returned to Storytell with enhanced functionality. Users can now select from supported models like GPT and Gemini options, with the chosen model clearly displayed during conversations.

This feature, which was popular in previous versions, gives users more control over their AI interactions. Whether you prefer the reasoning style of one model over another or want to experiment with different approaches to the same question, you now have that flexibility at your fingertips.

Labels

The most extensive update introduces a powerful labeling system that revolutionizes how users organize and access their files. Andy demonstrated the feature, which allows users to create custom labels complete with colors, icons, and descriptions.

Creating labels is intuitive and visual. Users can choose from predefined colors and icons, add descriptive names and detailed explanations of what each label represents. Labels appear prominently in the file list, making it easy to see how content is organized at a glance.

The system supports multiple labels per file, acknowledging that documents often serve multiple purposes or contain various types of information. Users can add and remove labels individually or use bulk operations to efficiently organize large sets of files.

Filtering becomes powerful with the new label system. Users can filter files by multiple labels simultaneously, with the system showing only files that contain all selected labels. This AND-logic approach helps users find exactly the content they need when working with complex, multi-faceted projects.

Labels integrate into Storytell's AI interactions through @mentioning functionality. Users can reference labels directly in their prompts, and the AI will understand that they want to work with all files associated with that label. Hovering over mentioned labels shows helpful tooltips with descriptions and file counts, while clicking opens a filtered view of associated files.

The system includes helpful visual cues, such as showing how many files are associated with each label and providing quick access to filtered views. When users hover over labels, they see the full name, description, and file count, making it easy to understand their organizational structure.

Label filtering

The labeling system includes sophisticated bulk operations that make managing large content libraries efficient. Users can select multiple files and add or remove labels across all selected items simultaneously. The interface intelligently shows which labels are already applied to selected files, making bulk operations clear and predictable.

Future improvements will include AI-suggested labels to help users organize content without manual effort, and more sophisticated filtering options that support complex queries with AND/OR logic combinations.
