Upcoming Updates: Workspaces, Smarter Labels, and AI Enhancements in Storytell

In this week’s engineering demo on March 14th, Storytell’s engineering team shared a series of updates designed to simplify user workflows and enhance AI-driven content management. This includes an upcoming reimagined dashboard UX/UI for a more intuitive chat experience and improved content categorization with dynamic labels. These updates aim to make it easier to navigate, organize, and retrieve information within Storytell.

A simplified chat experience

One of the biggest changes coming to Storytell is a revamped onboarding experience designed to make it easier for new users to start using the platform without unnecessary setup steps. The "Getting Started" screen removes unnecessary complexity by prioritizing the chat function. Instead of requiring new users to understand Collections upfront, they can:

  • Start a conversation immediately, without setting up collections.
  • Upload a file if needed, with files existing in the chat itself rather than requiring organization upfront.
  • Get instant value from Storytell without needing to navigate a complex hierarchy.

This change ensures that users can extract value from Storytell right away, without being slowed down by organizational structures they may not yet need.

Organizing work with workspaces and projects

The upcoming update will introduce workspaces and projects for a more structured, intuitive way to organize content.

  • Workspaces act as top-level containers, much like departments in an organization (e.g., Marketing or Product).
  • Projects exist within workspaces and represent specific initiatives, like a marketing campaign or a sales pipeline analysis.

This flat list makes for easier navigation. Additionally, permissions will be more flexible—users can control access at both the workspace and project levels.

Smarter content categorization with dynamic and static labels

To improve how users organize and retrieve knowledge, Storytell is introducing labels as a way to categorize content. There are two types of labels:

  • Static labels allow users to manually tag files or knowledge (e.g., marking a document as a "support ticket" or "competitor analysis").
  • Dynamic labels are generated automatically based on content. For example, if a document mentions a competitor, Storytell can extract that information and apply the relevant label without manual input.

This feature makes it easier to filter and categorize knowledge dynamically, ensuring consistency across the platform.

More control over knowledge scope

With the move to workspaces and projects, users will have more control over the knowledge scope for each project.

  • Instead of Collections automatically determining what knowledge is included in a chat, users can define which sources of information a project has access to.
  • This ensures that conversations stay focused on relevant data, preventing unnecessary or unrelated files from being included.
  • Knowledge scope settings can be adjusted per project, allowing teams to work with curated information based on their needs.

This separation of knowledge organization from chat interactions makes it easier to manage information without disrupting workflows.

A more adaptive user interface based on experience level

The engineering team is also exploring adaptive UI changes to tailor the platform based on user experience:

  • New users may see more tooltips, guided onboarding steps, and explanations to help them navigate Storytell.
  • Experienced users may have a cleaner interface, with fewer prompts and faster access to advanced features.
  • The system may automatically detect user experience level, but users will also be able to override settings manually if they prefer a different experience.

While still in early development, this feature aims to personalize the user experience, ensuring that both beginners and power users can navigate the platform in a way that suits their needs.

Custom AI instructions for more tailored responses

Another upcoming enhancement is the ability to set default AI instructions per user. Instead of adjusting settings manually for each conversation, users will be able to:

  • Define default instructions that will be automatically included in prompts.
  • Customize responses based on common use cases (e.g., always receiving a response in a structured table format).
  • Allow AI to learn from past interactions, gradually refining responses based on user preferences.

This update provides more control over AI outputs, helping users get the responses they need with minimal adjustments.

Organization-level AI model restrictions

To give organizations more control over which AI models are available, Storytell will introduce a new admin setting that allows companies to:

  • Restrict access to specific AI models for compliance, security, or policy reasons.
  • Decide which models employees can use for internal knowledge management.
  • Ensure data governance by only allowing approved models within the organization.

For example, if a company does not want employees using certain models like DeepSeek or LLaMA, they can disable those options at the organization level. This ensures that AI interactions align with internal security and privacy standards.

A new way to select AI models

Storytell has always allowed users to override the default AI model selection by adding "use [model name]" within their prompts. Now, selecting a specific model is even more intuitive with the addition of a model picker button.

Instead of manually typing an override, users can now:

  • Select a model directly from a dropdown menu in the prompt bar.
  • Keep DynamicLLM mode enabled for automatic selection.
  • Easily switch models without needing to remember special commands.

This update, now live, provides a more user-friendly way for those who want precise control over which model is used.

What’s next?

These updates are part of an ongoing effort to refine Storytell’s user experience and improve AI-powered workflows. The team is finalizing the transition plan, with these features expected to roll out in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for further updates as these changes move closer to release.
