NYTimes reporter Catie Edmondson shared how arduous the process is to read congressional spending bills in this podcast episode.(https://overcast.fm/+oIe_vCjm4/20:46) We figured we'd see how Storytell might be able to help: We started by using the Storytell Chrome Extension (https://go.Storytell.ai/chrome)on the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 (https://appropriations.house.gov/sites/democrats.appropriations.house.gov/files/FY23%20Summary%20of%20Appropriations%20Provisions.pdf)-- a dense, 53-page PDF, which Storytell split into 153 Story Tiles™: Storytell gave us a summary of the 53-page PDF with key concepts: We were now also able to "chat" with the PDF right from the web page, like this: But the Chrome extension is just the start -- by running it on content like this PDF, the content is also added to the user's SmartChat™ dashboard, enabling it to be tagged, like this: How does the 2023 bill compare to the 2022 bill? Let's dive even deeper -- the 53 page PDF above was a summary of the US Congress bill. Let's look at the actual, raw 1,068 page PDF of the 2022 spending bill.(https://www.congress.gov/117/bills/hr2471/BILLS-117hr2471enr.pdf) This time Storytell split that into 1,717 Story Tiles™: This lets you do a much deeper analysis of the full text of the documents, and by putting both documents into a SmartChat™ view like this, you can "chat" with and compare both documents: The power of SmartChat™ -- comparing the 2022 vs. 2023 bills: SmartChat™ allows you to define what you want to interact with -- in this case, we've created a SmartChat™ tag called "US Congressional Funding Bills" and put the 2022 and 2023 bills into it. You can try SmartChatting with these two bills right here!™(https://storytell.ai/smartchat/org/u-T6Zt3zk4UDcw9Lv7BpUJTdBLJjl2/t_mytag-SwAJAsFZcziGpTUV7tR59R?view=smartchat&name=US+Congressional+Funding+Bills&privateActive=true&showMarkdown=true) Now, we can ask questions like this: Which results in output like this: Congressional Funding: 2022 vs. 2023 Executive Summary: The 2023 Congressional funding bill, titled the Consolidated Appropriations Act, shows significant changes compared to the 2022 bill. The 2023 bill provides increased funding in various areas, including agriculture, rural development, food and drug administration, justice, science, and homeland security. It also includes provisions for promoting diversity and inclusion, gender equality, and support for veterans. The bill addresses critical issues such as climate resilience, cybersecurity, and border security. Notably, it allocates significant funds for infrastructure projects and housing programs. Most Interesting Points: - Increased funding for economic development, law enforcement, and gun violence prevention efforts. - Strong emphasis on climate resilience and research, with record-level funding for clean energy. - Investments in border security and improvements to processing, sheltering, and medical care for migrants. - Enhanced security measures for the Capitol Complex following the recommendations from January 6th. - Expanded support for veterans, including increased funding for medical care, mental health services, and homelessness assistance. - Promoting diversity and inclusion within the diplomatic and development workforce. - New grant programs to incentivize affordable housing initiatives and inclusionary zoning practices. Decisions and Action Items: - Increased funding for Members Representational Allowance, paid interns, and childcare subsidy program. - Establishment of a House Intern Resource Office to support internship opportunities. - Funding allocation for residential security, district office security, and Dignitary Protection Division agents enforcement. - Funding for resiliency and preservation of manufactured housing communities. - Competitive grant program to reward communities improving inclusionary zoning practices and housing infrastructure. - Expansion of housing units for intergenerational families and affordable housing for seniors and persons with disabilities. - Continued support for housing counseling, legal aid assistance for eviction prevention, and lead hazard control. Feelings, Needs, and Reactions: - Positive feelings expressed about increased funding for veterans' medical care and mental health services. - Need for affordable housing solutions and support for vulnerable populations, such as seniors and persons with disabilities. - Meaningful reaction to the establishment of the House Intern Resource Office to enhance internship opportunities. - Supportive reaction to the funding allocation for residential and district office security to ensure Member safety. - Concerns expressed about the need for comprehensive immigration reform alongside border security efforts. - Positive reaction to the emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the diplomatic and development workforce. - Appreciation for the funding dedicated to climate resilience, clean energy, and climate change research. Enjoy!

If you've ever bought or sold a home, you've likely had to wade through many dense property disclosure forms, legal contracts, federal and state closing documents, and more. And it's likely that you've probably signed documents without fully understanding them -- or you've missed important details in the home buying or selling process that you've uncovered later (like finding a tax lien or other title issue on the property, or finding that something was built in violation of county permit standards, etc). REALTORS: Creating a Storytell SmartChat™ for your clients with all their documents is a great way to help clients deeply understand the buying and selling process you're guiding them through! Storytell's SmartChat™(https://storytell.ai/?title=Real%20Estate) platform can help. And because we prioritize data privacy (https://go.storytell.ai/privacy)and allow you to SmartChat™ with just your documents, you can control who's able to see and interact with the documents. You can create a Storytell account here (https://storytell.ai/createaccount)to get started, and here's a video showing how to use SmartChat™: Screenshots from the video: Storytell Chrome Extension (https://go.Storytell.ai/chrome)screenshots:

If you're familiar with vendor security questionnaires, you're probably also familiar with the arduous process you need to go through to provide specific and verifiable company answers. Oftentimes, you may not even know where your company's policies are located, or what they contain. SmartChat™ can help. Here's an example of a Storytell user answering this security question: Step 1: Load your policies into SmartChat™ You can load all your policies (no matter what format they live in) into SmartChat. Here's what this user did: Then upload them to Storytell and tag them: Step 2: SmartChat™ with just that tag and start asking your questions! In the example above, the user is asking: Are applications designed in accordance with industry accepted standards (e.g., OWASP for web applications)? And Storytell's response based on the underlying policy information is: Yes, applications at [company] are designed in accordance with industry-accepted standards, including those outlined by the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) for web applications. The Secure Development Policy of [company] mandates that all software development, including web applications, must adhere to established standards and policies. This includes conducting system security testing at defined periods during the development lifecycle and ensuring that no code is deployed to production systems without documented, successful test results and evidence of security remediation activities. Additionally, application code is scanned prior to deployment, and patches to address application vulnerabilities that materially impact security should be deployed within 90 days of discovery. Acceptance testing programs and related criteria are established for new information systems, upgrades, and new versions, which further aligns with industry best practices such as those recommended by OWASP. The policy also specifies the protection of test data, ensuring that confidential customer data is protected in accordance with all contracts and commitments, and is not used for testing purposes without explicit permission from the data owner and the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). This careful approach to software development and adherence to industry standards is part of [company]'s commitment to maintaining a secure and reliable computing environment. Done! You can use Story Tiles™ to verify the veracity of the underlying policy information in the answers:

What if Storytell could write a piece of content in your voice that combines your past content (like all of your Zoom calls, from this example) with popular business or organizational frameworks? It's quite easy, with SmartChat™: Step 1: Upload your content into Storytell: Here are instructions (https://docs.storytell.ai/How+to+use+Storytell/1+-+Storytell+Dashboard/2+-+%22Content+Manager%22+Section/2+-+Upload+content+to+your+SmartChat%E2%84%A2)on uploading your content (you can also see how Eve automates this process (https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-executive/make-your-zoom-meetings-profitable)with her Zoom calls). Step 2: Run this prompt: Select the top 20 topic ideas from this content and relate each to a well known team dynamics, business or organizational framework. Return the output in a table format, with the topic idea in the first column, the relevant framework in the second column, and the reason for the relationship in the third column. Here's some sample output from Storytell: Step 3: Have Storytell write a detailed post in your voice: You can teach Storytell to write (or re-write) content "in your voice. Here's a post on how to do that.(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/storytell-prompt-marketplace/have-storytell-create-a-voice-document-from-a-smartchat-tm-and-then-write-or-re-write-content-for-you-using-your-voice) Once you've trained Storytell in your voice, you can prompt it like this, by picking one of the results above: Write an executive summary that draws parallels to how creating a Technical Advisory Board (TAB) relates to the RACI framework. After the executive summary, include a table that relates elements of the TAB to RACI, with the TAB concept in column one, the corresponding RACI concept in column 2, and a 500 character description of why you made the relation in column 3. And you'll get output like this:

It's easy to ask Storytell to create a "voice" document that defines your writing style, and then have Storytell write content for you in that voice. Here's how: Step 1: Define your voice: Here are detailed instructions (https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-social-media-mgr/create-a-voice-doc-using-ai?origin=notification)on how to create a "Voice" document Let's try it: Use this Voice prompt in any SmartChat™ tag: A "voice" document is a way to describe the writing style based on all the content here. When creating a "voice" document, use the concept of "over statements". An "over statement" is one good thing over another good thing. For example, if the content is humorous, the over statement might be "Humorous over Intellectual". Create a "voice" document using "over statements" in a Markdown table, with each row being a different "over statement" in bold in the first column, followed by a 100 word summary detailing why that over statement was chosen in the second column. In the third column, give an example from the body of work to support the conclusion in Column one. Here's a close-up of the prompt: Here's a full page showing the output of the voice (this is from a related post about making meetings profitable)(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-executive/make-your-zoom-meetings-profitable): You can "copy" or "download" your voice document by hovering over the chat response, like this: Step 2: Tell Storytell to write in your voice: Now you can tell Storytell to write in your voice using ths prompt (replace the parts in yellow) The following text describes [YOUR NAME's] “Voice”: [ paste the voice output in here that you copied from above] Next, I will ask you to re-write content in [YOUR NAME's]'s voice. Apply this “Voice” treatment to your output so it is consistent with the style of [YOUR NAME's]. Respond with “I am ready to write in [YOUR NAME's] Voice.” And Storytell will respond like this: Now, you can have Storytell write or re-write content in your voice. For example: Enjoy!

Adam Frankl (https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamfrankl)helps startup founders create developer categories. He was the first Marketing VP at 3 developer-facing unicorns: JFrog, Neo4j, & Sourcegraph. These days, he's a full'time CEO coach, advising founders of early-stage developer-facing startups. This means Adam is on Zoom calls all day long. He turned to Storytell to get much more value from the time he's already spending on Zoom without doing any additional work. "Storytell + Vin: 1) anonymizes and 2) extracts the pivotal coaching moment from every interaction." - Adam Frankl If you're an executive, you're probably also on Zoom, Webex or similar calls all day long. Here's how we can help you make your meetings profitable by turning internal Zoom meetings into both internal and external go-to-market fuel for yourself and your company -- just like we're doing for Adam: Let's make your endless Zoom meetings profitable: What if you had a frictionless process to turn those calls you're already on anyway into: • Internal FAQ / knowledgebase content for your team, department or company • Internal company training content • Internal marketing content to rally your company • External LinkedIn thought leadership posts • External Company or personal blog posts • Even: writing chapters in a book that showcases your expertise Storytell makes this not only possible, but it can be completely frictionless. Here's how: In this use case example, we're going to walk through how we do this for Adam, who is often on Zoom calls with startup founders, helping them figure out their marketing strategy. Adam wanted to take all the Zoom calls he's on and turn them into LinkedIn posts as well as a book. Here's how he did it: Meet Vin: A Storytell-certified technical writer Adam wanted to "set it and forget it" without doing any additional work, so he contracted with a certified Storytell partner, Vin Cilento (https://www.linkedin.com/in/vincentcilento/)from AmplifyThought.com.(http://AmplifyThought.com) Vin partners with Storytell as a content engineer to run this playbook. (If you're a content writer and you want to do the same, here's a webinar on how to go from content w(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-social-media-mgr/storytell-webinar-an-introduction-to-content-engineering-with-llms-by-using-smartchat-tm)riter (https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-social-media-mgr/storytell-webinar-an-introduction-to-content-engineering-with-llms-by-using-smartchat-tm)to content e(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-social-media-mgr/storytell-webinar-an-introduction-to-content-engineering-with-llms-by-using-smartchat-tm)ngineer)(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/use-case-social-media-mgr/storytell-webinar-an-introduction-to-content-engineering-with-llms-by-using-smartchat-tm). You can also contact Vin to run this playbook for you -- or if you want to do it yourself, here's how: Step 1: Ingest your Zoom meetings into Storytell: Option 1: Automatic uploads: You can set up a "Zoom → Storytell" automation using Zapier (http://www.Zapier.com)or Pipedream (https://pipedream.com/)(a more advanced tool) to have all your Zoom calls automatically uploaded into Storytell. • If you'd like to set this up: Book a call with us (https://go.Storytell.ai/DROdio-25mins)and we'll walk you through it • If you'd rather not set this step up, you can have Vin from AmplifyThought handle it for you as a part of his service. Option 2: Manual uploads: If you don't want all your Zoom calls automatically loaded into Storytell, you can also manually upload selected Zoom recordings into Storytell -- either the MP4, or even faster, the .vtt Zoom transcript. Here's how to do that.(https://docs.storytell.ai/How+to+use+Storytell/1+-+Storytell+Dashboard/2+-+%22Content+Manager%22+Section/2+-+Upload+content+to+your+SmartChat%E2%84%A2) You can set Zapier or Pipedream up to have each Zoom recording show up for you in email or via Slack, and then pick the ones you want to upload into Storytell -- here are two example outputs from the Zapier or Pipedream automation: Have Zoom calls show up in your email: Have Zoom calls show up in Slack: Step 2: Creat a SmartChat™ tag for all your uploaded zoom content. You can easily create tags & groupings in SmartChat™ (https://docs.storytell.ai/How+to+use+Storytell/1+-+Storytell+Dashboard/2+-+%22Content+Manager%22+Section/3+-+Create+tags+and+groupings+in+SmartChat%E2%84%A2)so you can SmartChat™ with all your Zoom recordings at once. Here's an example of what that looks like in the Storytell dashboard: You can also teach Storytell to write (or re-write) content "in your voice. Here's a post on how to do that.(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/storytell-prompt-marketplace/have-storytell-create-a-voice-document-from-a-smartchat-tm-and-then-write-or-re-write-content-for-you-using-your-voice) Step 3: Have Storytell output content from your Zoom calls -- all using your unique voice: Now you've got everything you need to have Storytell create content like this from your Zoom calls: Write a LinkedIn post: Here's the prompt you can use: Write a LinkedIn post about "The Anatomy of a Successful Developer Startup" using [YOUR NAME's] voice. Format in Markdown with bold title sections. Create an internal training document from your Zoom calls -- and get the underlying Story Tiles™ as reference footnote: Want to get creative? Try building Content Mashups from all your Zoom calls(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/storytell-prompt-marketplace/create-a-content-mashup-your-content-popular-frameworks) The results: Adam's responses to Vin: Since Adam is having Vin from AmplifyThought.com (http://AmplifyThought.com)run this process for him, he just gets the results emailed to him -- and he typically loves the output!

In 🎓 How to Use Storytell
Large language models (LLMs) have a hard time working with CSVs because the data lives far away from the labels. Here's an example of what that means: In this example, let's imagine you have a massive spreadsheet of data -- like API request response times. You might want to ask Storytell a question about the data, like "What was TechAnalytics' request time in November 2021?". But the title label of that column and description label of that row are far away from the number; there are many numbers in-between. When an Storytell (or any LLM) tries to parse the data, it doesn't know to attach the column "November 2021" and row "Tech Analytics" labels to answer. Here's how to fix this: Convert your .CSV into an .XML file While you can't upload .csv files into SmartChat™, you can upload XML files. XML is a structured markup language that wraps the labels around the data. We recommend using OnlineCSVTools.com.(https://onlinecsvtools.com/convert-csv-to-xml) Here's how it works: Here's what your .CSV file looks like once you've converted it to XML: You can see the first <November 2021> label now wraps the data: Now, you can try SmartChatting with that record: Want to try it yourself? Here's the actual SmartChat™ from below!(https://storytell.ai/org/u-T6Zt3zk4UDcw9Lv7BpUJTdBLJjl2/r-jkgwad6XYGi8DKAtzvzATm/?chatName=updated-data.xml) -- ask it your own questions, too!

This is a great Storytell use case for #ProductManagers. We are using Storytell to build Storytell (aka "dogfooding" our own platform) by loading in all our past conversations with our users into the Storytell platform. This includes our past Zoom calls (as MP4 videos), our past Slack conversations, our past notes, etc. We just load it all into the system; we don't worry about structuring it in any specific way. We can "chat" with each of our users before getting on a call with them. We call this a SmartChat™. Here's how it works: At right is an example where we were about to get on a call with a user named Stephen. We wanted to know what we should ask him on the next call. How could we be as prepared as possible to use our time with him effectively? You can see in the example that we've constrained the SmartChat to only give us answers back that are specific to Stephen by clicking the `Stephen` tag. Erika, our Chief Customer Officer, asked Storytell in the SmartChat™ window `What should I ask Stephen in our next call?` The SmartChat™ gave us back seven answers based on what is important to Stephen: And with Story Tiles™, we're able to click on the reference footnotes to see the actual ground-truth data about what original document that answer is coming from: Storytell gives you superpowers as a product manager -- you can walk into meetings with full context on what's important to your users. You can reference specific things they said and easily get to the nugget of ground-truth data from a call you were on six months ago, via Story Tiles™. We'd love to hear your feedback if you're using Storytell for a use case like this!

In 🏎 Our "Operating System"
Storytell recently did a user offsite at Paradise Ridge winery (https://www.web.storytell.ai/rapid-prototyping-user-offsite-at-paradise-ridge)in Santa Rosa, CA. We built on everything we learned in our San Diego user offsite (https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/our-operating-system/how-we-run-our-user-driven-innovation-rapid-prototyping-offsites)and our BVI boat trip.(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/engineering-demos-updates/zight-storytell-building-an-ai-summary-chat-mvp-for-zight-on-a-boat-in-the-bvis) We set up glamping "yurts" to save on costs as an early-stage startup (thank you for your understanding and incredible adventurous attitude, users!) and we spent the weekend going deeper on how users are using our platform -- and how they'd like to be using it. We learned so much from our users. For example, we learned that our VirtualMe™ approach was backwards -- users don't want to first create a data container and then upload data into it. Instead, users wanted to be able to quickly and dynamically chat with any grouping or slice of knowledge they choose -- so we've sunsetted VirtualMe™ and created SmartChat™.(https://www.web.storytell.ai/support/share-your-feedback/introducing-storytell-smartchat-tm-feature) We learned that data privacy and control really matters to our users. We knew this, but we really understood during the offsite that enterprise data privacy was the #1 blocker that was keeping users from more deeply using our platform. So we built http://Sparkle.ai (http://Sparkle.ai)-- an open-source data sanitization service that Storytell uses to anonymize enterprise data (not just PII but also specific enterprise terms). These are just two of our big learnings from the weekend -- there were many more, and it's all resulted in a launch of a brand new Storytell dashboard that features SmartChats,™ which we'll be announcing more broadly soon. Here's a preview: We've also incorporated Visual Story Tiles,™ so you can inspect LLM answers down to the source: What's most incredible about the speed at which our Storytell Crew is building is how quickly we're going from "user has feedback" to "shipped to production." For example, our Crew built Sparkle.ai (http://Sparkle.ai)in just 2 days and executed on SmartChat™ in just over two weeks: 🙏 Thank you, users -- what a great offsite and opportunity to learn from you. Can't wait to continue building Storytell with you. Here are a few additional pictures from the offsite: Looking forward to getting together with you again this fall!

Our Storytell crew loves to set goals that feel "uncomfortably unachievable" -- and then nail them. We did this in July 2022, in December 2022 and in March 2023. At the recent Storytell user offsite at Paradise Ridge winery in Santa Rosa, we set a North Star Metric goal of 50,000 -- about 10x our NSM score at the time. Here's us setting the goal together:

What is Sparkle? Sparkle is an open source project that sanitizes sensitive data. You can learn how to use Sparkle here. Here's an example of what Sparkle does: Why did Storytell create Sparkle? Storytell.ai is a powerful AI system for bringing knowledge alive within an enterprise. We've heard from Fortune 500 users that in order for them to leverage the power of Storytell, they need to ensure their sensitive company data is not being sent to 3rd party systems like OpenAI (or other foundational LLM models), Zilliz (or other vector databases), Deepgram (or other processing services), etc. How does Sparkle solve the "Enterprise AI data problem"? We've built Sparkle to be a data sanitization pre-processing engine, and we've created it as a fully open source service. Open source was important to us so enterprises can fully inspect the code and even run it locally in their own environments. Sparkle is used to sanitize an enterprise's sensitive data before that data is sent to Storytell, meaning the actual sensitive underlying data stays safely within the enterprise and Storytell is only using swapped synthetic data in all it's services. Here's how to use Sparkle.ai with Storytell.ai:

In 🎉 Life at Storytell
Yes! Storytell is very "side project" friendly. We believe that side projects unlock our creativity that then enables us to do better work at Storytell (bringing new technologies into the company, new approaches, etc) California is also a very "side project" friendly state (here's the relevant labor code), which means that no employer can claim ownership over what you do in your free time, regardless of what the employment contract states. This is why our CIIA (the company invention assignment document you sign when you start) specifically scopes inventions to "company inventions". It's also why we specifically call out applicable state law limiting invention assignment in our CIIA. So hopefully you can tell that we're fully supportive of you learning, growing and experimenting on your own time -- your manager's main concern is only going to be you & them doing great work at Storytell to build the future together. You can also learn about our "Future Founder Promise" at the bottom of the Storytell Careers page: Here's a screenshot:

PRFAQs are a tool used by product managers and a technique popularized by Amazon: Writing a combination press release + FAQ when defining a feature. Companies tend to have a lot of PRFAQs floating around inside the organization. Storytell can help you make sense of these and other long or complex internal documents. Here's how: Step 1: Load your PRFAQ into Storytell.ai Let's use this sample PRFAQ. You can load it into Storytell.ai in several ways: Option #1: Print to a PDF, then upload the PDF into Storytell.ai You can try this yourself! I've created this PDF from the sample PRFAQ -- just download it to your computer. Then upload the PDF to http://Storytell.ai Option #2: Copy the text from the web page and paste it into Storytell.ai You can try this yourself! Simply copy the text from the web page Choose the Text option on http://Storytell.ai and paste the text in Option #3: Install the Storytell Chrome Extension and navigate right to the PRFAQ page You can also take Storytell with you as you navigate the web by installing our Chrome Extension Storytell will automatically summarize any page, including your PRFAQ page, and allow you to chat with it from there. Step 2: Bring the PRFAQ alive -- now you can summarize it, chat with it, repurpose it, and more Here's a quick example of Storytell processing this sample PRFAQ. You can find the actual Storytell report of the PRFAQ here Feel free to chat with it right from the page above! In the example below, I'm asking Storytell to repurpose the PRFAQ as a blog post. Enjoy! We'd love to hear more from you as you try this -- and leave any comments below with questions or suggestions about this use case!
