As Storytell’s Principal Software Engineer, you will focus on the development, design, and execution of Storytell’s enterprise AI platform. You’ll work alongside our AI experts and frontend engineers to integrate our DistillAI algorithm into every aspect of the platform, and you’ll get to work leverage leading LLMs from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face and others.

We are a small, early-stage, fast-moving team. We really listen to the market; our truth comes from our users. You’ll get opportunities to see the immediate, daily impact of your code getting into users’ hands. We work in public as much as we can, doing user-driven rapid prototyping offsites, and even sharing our engineering demos with the world. Ship. Iterate. Repeat. We’re all about shots on goal, and building the right thing fast, instead of the wrong thing right.

You’ll play a crucial role in leading and shaping the future of our software engineering efforts and the engineering team. You will be responsible for elevating engineering best practices, leading architecture conversations, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality software solutions with a focus on integrating leading AI/ML technologies into our SaaS platform. You should be extremely capable, willing to get your hands dirty, excited about joining an early-stage company, and thrive off of the pressures and challenges of working in an unstructured startup environment. Job responsibilities: This is the scope of work the job entails — although we are all Crew, so we help each other succeed outside of these core responsibilities

1. Leadership and Team Alignment:

  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality software solutions: Create an enterprise-grade SaaS platform with a focus on usability, stability and scalability.

  • Be a leader in the engineering organization: Mentor and develop team members. Help more junior engineers learn software engineering excellence skillsets and work together effectively within teams and across teams. Show leadership through modeling of technical excellence, elevating org-wide practices, and guiding long-term vision.

  • Foster an “impact-first” mentality: Help team members understand how their work ties to the business objectives. Nurture a customer/user mindset. Motivate others to be curious, ask questions, and do think without being asked. Create a culture of agility and service.

  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement: Support appropriate levels of investment in DevOps infrastructure engineering culture to create engineering excellence across “people, process, and technology.

2. Strategic Planning and Direction:

  • Work with DROdio, the CEO, and Erika, the CCO, to set the overall strategic direction for the software engineering department.

  • Understand the priorities of other departments to align on project direction and engineering priorities.

  • Ensure the alignment of engineering strategies with the company's business goals.

3. Technical Oversight:

  • Advocate for technical excellence and integrity, with measures and standards for code quality, platform performance and issue resolution

  • Manage technical debt and trade-offs effectively.

  • Oversee the adoption of best practices in software development.

4. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and QA.

  • Communicate technical concepts and strategies effectively to non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements for this role: These are the minimum requirements we are looking for in this role

  • 10x, high-impact principal-level engineer with a focus on shipping high-quality code with velocity

  • Experience working in world-class engineering teams and delivering enterprise SaaS technology & product experiences.

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Proven experience in leadership roles within high-performing software engineering teams.

  • Strong technical background in software development and architecture.

  • Excellent leadership and mentorship skills.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Experienced and adept at What I Need From You (WINFY) in cross-functional interfacing

  • Living our shared values

The ideal candidate: Will also have these skills in addition to the minimums above

  • Has worked with AI foundational large language model APIs from leading providers like Hugging Face, OpenAI or Anthropic

  • Has worked with frontend frameworks such as React, Vue, Angular, etc.

  • Has deep familiarity with the GCP product suite and has migrated from Cloud Run to Kubernetes
